We don\u2019t touch, look at, or ask to play games with anyone\u2019s private parts.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Why it Matters: <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>At a young age, children begin to show curiosity about their own and other people\u2019s bodies. While curiosity is natural, it\u2019s important to explain to children that their private parts are just for them, and that others\u2019 private parts are off limits.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What to Say: <\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Use accurate names for anatomical parts<\/li>\n<li>Let them know no one, not even a friend or family member, has the right to touch a child\u2019s private parts<\/li>\n<li>Sometimes, a caregiver or doctor may need to check a private area if they are sick or in pain, but they should always explain why and ask for permission<\/li>\n<li>Encourage the child to tell a trusted adult if they ever experience unwanted touches from an adult or another child<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-11422 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/carecenter-okc.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/Untitled-design-1-300x300.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/carecenter-okc.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/Untitled-design-1-300x300.png 300w, https:\/\/carecenter-okc.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/Untitled-design-1-1024x1024.png 1024w, https:\/\/carecenter-okc.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/Untitled-design-1-150x150.png 150w, https:\/\/carecenter-okc.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/Untitled-design-1-768x768.png 768w, https:\/\/carecenter-okc.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/Untitled-design-1.png 1080w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul><\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4><strong>O- Okay to Say NO:<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Every child has the right to say \u201cNO\u201d to anyone\u2014adult, teen, or child\u2014touching their body or asking to be touched.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Why it Matters: <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>90 percent of the time, children are abused by someone they <strong>know, love, and trust<\/strong>. For this reason, it is important that caregivers never force children to touch anyone, including family members or friends.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0\u201cCulturally, it may be expected to give family members hugs and kisses, but it is important to give children the option to decline. A touch doesn\u2019t have to be \u201cbad\u201d to be unwanted, and giving a child the choice to accept or refuse a touch lays a foundation for the concepts of consent and bodily autonomy,\u201d says Lynch.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What to Say: <\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Remind the child it is always okay to say <strong>NO<\/strong> to any touches, even caring touches<\/li>\n<li>Explain to children the difference between caring touches such as a pat on the back versus those that are confusing or unsafe<\/li>\n<li>Let the child know that even if they are unsure if a touch is caring or unsafe, they can always ask a trusted adult to help them decide<\/li>\n<li>The child should know that if they do experience and uncomfortable or unsafe touch they should immediately tell a trusted adult<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-11423 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/carecenter-okc.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/Untitled-design-2-300x300.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/carecenter-okc.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/Untitled-design-2-300x300.png 300w, https:\/\/carecenter-okc.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/Untitled-design-2-1024x1024.png 1024w, https:\/\/carecenter-okc.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/Untitled-design-2-150x150.png 150w, https:\/\/carecenter-okc.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/Untitled-design-2-768x768.png 768w, https:\/\/carecenter-okc.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/Untitled-design-2.png 1080w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<h4><strong>A- Always Talk About Secrets:<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>It&#8217;s important for children to learn the difference between a <strong><u>secret<\/u><\/strong> y <strong><u>surprise<\/u><\/strong>, and to talk about things that make them feel sad, scared, or unsafe.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Why it Matters: <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Perpetrators use secrecy to gain and maintain access to their victims. It\u2019s important that children can differentiate between secrets that make them feel unsafe, confidential information, and harmless surprises. <strong>Secrets between adults and children should not exist.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>What to Say: <\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Surprises are exciting for everyone and are only a secret for a short period of time\n<ul>\n<li>Try saying: <em>\u201cSurprises are fun for everyone and are things like a surprise birthday party or a gift we are giving to a friend.\u201d<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Secrets, especially those that feel unsafe or scary, should never be kept\n<ul>\n<li>Try saying: <em>\u201cSecrets should never be kept from adults, especially secrets that make us feel scared or unsafe.\u201d<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Explain that <strong>no adults should ask a child to keep secrets<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-11424 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/carecenter-okc.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/Untitled-design-3-300x300.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/carecenter-okc.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/Untitled-design-3-300x300.png 300w, https:\/\/carecenter-okc.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/Untitled-design-3-1024x1024.png 1024w, https:\/\/carecenter-okc.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/Untitled-design-3-150x150.png 150w, https:\/\/carecenter-okc.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/Untitled-design-3-768x768.png 768w, https:\/\/carecenter-okc.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/Untitled-design-3.png 1080w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<h4><strong>R- Raise Your Voice and Tell Someone:<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Let children know that they can speak to a safe grownup if anyone\u2014a stranger, a family member, or a friend\u2014makes them feel uncomfortable. Help children identify<strong> at least three safe adults both inside and outside of the home<\/strong>. Safe adults listen without judgement, validate a child&#8217;s feelings, and advocate for a child\u2019s safety.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Why it Matters: <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Nationally, it is estimated that only <strong>1 in 10 children<\/strong> will tell someone about their abuse. However, when communities implement a child abuse prevention program, children feel more empowered to disclose their abuse to a trusted adult. Regular, open, and honest communication with children can be a safeguard against child abuse.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What to Say: <\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Reassure children that it\u2019s okay to speak with other grownups if they don\u2019t feel comfortable talking with a caregiver<\/li>\n<li>Safe adults could be extended family members, teachers, school counselors, or other persistent figures in a child\u2019s life<\/li>\n<li>Regularly discuss and review who the safe adults are in your child\u2019s life<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If a child discloses abuse to you, <strong>believe what they say<\/strong>, thank them for telling you, then report suspected abuse to law enforcement and DHS. <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Every Oklahoman is a mandated reporter of child abuse.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>For an interactive learning experience with a child, purchase <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Rex-Finds-ROAR-CARE-Center\/dp\/0692856005\">Rex encuentra su rugido<\/a> on Amazon.
